Plant appearance may vary

Plants may vary in appearance depending on the season, grower, or specific crop. All plants are guaranteed to be healthy and true to variety at the time of purchase.

Why plants may look different in the nursery

Plants are living, seasonal products. The photos on our website may show plants at different stages of growth, during peak seasonal beauty, or as provided by the grower.

Because of this, the plant you see in the nursery may look different depending on the time of year, the plant’s age, or natural growing conditions.

What affects how a plant looks?

Seasonal changes
Many plants look dramatically different throughout the year. Deciduous plants may flower in spring, grow full foliage in summer, change color in fall, and appear dormant in winter.

Plant maturity
Photos often show mature plants so you can see their long-term beauty. Younger plants in the nursery are still growing toward that size and shape.

Supplier photography
Some images come from our growers to help illustrate mature flowers, color, or growth habits that may not be visible year-round.

Even if a plant looks smaller or different than the photo today, it has the potential to grow into the beautiful specimen shown.

Tip: Plants in winter may appear dormant but are still healthy and ready to grow in the spring.

If you have questions about what a plant should look like during a certain season, our team is always happy to help.

Agave ovatifolia 'Vanzie' is a clonal selection of the fabulous whale's tongue agave from plantsman Kelly Griffin. Plant Delights Nursery notes that their eight year-old specimen flowered in 2022 after it had reached a whopping 4' tall x 7' wide. Agave ovatifolia 'Vanzie' was selected for its splendid ventral leaf folds, smaller teeth, a more scalloped, wavy leaf edge, and a very fast growth rate. Agave ovatifolia 'Vanzie' has been superb in garden trials for damp, cold winter tolerance. Good drainage, dry winter soils, and moisture protection during the first winter are still important.

Botanical Name
Agave ovatifolia 'Vanzie'
Rate of Growth
Plants mature typically mature at around 4-5' tall and wide, though some have gotten even larger with age. Planting in containers will restrict the growth unless they are sized up over time.
Where to Plant
Site in full sun. NOTE: These agave are supposedly cold-hardy to about 5 degrees, but we'd still recommend siting them in a place with winter protection or in containers that can be moved indoors during the coldest winter nights.
