Previously known as "Southern Shield" fern, this cold-hardy fern is grown for its gorgeous 24-30" fronds, its slowly spreading growth-habit AND its ability to thrive in more sun than most other hardy ferns.
A favorite of garden designer, Dabney Peeples, we have a large bed of Southern Wood fern in our gaden.
This planting was begun with three 1-gallon plants in about 1995. At the same time, we planted three 1-gallon Ostrich ferns in this same area. Notice how the Ostrich ferns steal the show in March, April and May, then Southern Wood takes over as the show stopper for the rest of summer and fall.

Botanical Name
Thelypteris normalis
Rate of Growth
Southern Shield fern matures at 24-30" tall by about 36" wide.
Where to Plant
While Southern Wood tolerates more sun than most other ferns, it still appreciates a bit of a break from all-day sun.
