A terrific alternative to Japanese yew, a northern-grown plant that doesn't enjoy our summer heat and humidity, 'Prostrata' Southern spreading yew is grown for its gracefully spreading, evergreen foliage and its versatility to thrive in either sun or shade.
See our planting (2001) under 'Heritage' river birch in the nursery garden. These plants have never been pruned, so they are about 4' tall. They could easily have been maintained at just 2-3' tall with once-a-year trimming.
NOTE: All Southern yew is DEER-RESISTANT.

Botanical Name
Cephalataxus harringtonia 'Prostrata'
Rate of Growth
Plants grow to 2-3' tall by 3-4' wide in 10 years, then to 4' tall with age, at a rate of 6-12" a year. May easily keep at 2-3' tall with once-a-year trimming.
Where to Plant
Southern yew is versatile, thriving in either sun or shade. Along with fatsia, aucuba, podocarpus and aspidistra, Southern yew is one of the most shade tolerant plants we offer.
