Size

Not a true pine, Japanese umbrella pine is not often seen outside botanical garden collections. And when available for sale, it's always small and quite expensive. That's because these trees grow very slowly (3-4" a year) and they're not always the easiest to grow, at least for the first couple years. We suggest babying it a bit with water during dry summers and siting it in a spot that receives a bit of shade from the hottest part of the afternoon summer sun.
This evergreen tree grows to only about 10' in 25 years and is said to be as ancient as the ginkgo, which has been around since biblical times.

Botanical Name
Sciadopitys verticillata
Rate of Growth
Plan on your umbrella pine living in your garden as a small, very unusual specimen tree, growing to no more than 10' tall by 5' wide in 25 years.
Where to Plant
Plant in a spot that receives some afternoon summer shade.
