An Avocado in South Carolina? With some coddling, it just might be true! 'Lila' offers great avocado flavor - similar to Mexican varieties - and is cold hardy to about 15 degrees, meaning that it will over-winter successfully in the majority of SC winters. However, to be safe it may be best to plant 'Lila' in a large container to bring indoors when an arctic freeze comes our way. Fruit is produced at an early age, sometimes within 3-4 years, and ripens in the late summer or early fall.

Botanical Name
Persea americana 'Lila'
Rate of Growth
In the ground, 'Lila' will reach 10-15'. In containers, plants will likely mature at half this size or smaller.
Where to Plant
When young, 'Lila' should receive some shade from the hottest part of the afternoon summer sun. Once mature, plants thrive even in full sun.
